Do You Really Need a 5G Cell Signal Booster?


When customers contact Pavlock Technologies about poor cellular service inside their home, office, warehouse, metal building, or commercial facility, one of the first things we often hear is:



“I need a 5G signal booster.”

That makes sense. Most modern smartphones display 5G regularly, and carriers have spent years advertising their expanding 5G networks.

But improving indoor cellular coverage is a little more complicated than simply purchasing something with “5G” printed on the box.



Not Every “5G Compatible” Booster Is Boosting True 5G NR

Many cellular signal boosters installed today primarily amplify the traditional cellular frequency bands that have supported 4G LTE networks for years.

Some of these frequencies can also be used for 5G services, which is one reason many cellular boosters are advertised as 5G compatible.


However, that doesn't necessarily mean the system amplifies every 5G frequency your carrier uses.


Newer 5G deployments can utilize additional spectrum, including mid-band 5G NR frequencies such as C-band. A conventional wideband cellular booster may not amplify those frequencies at all.


That distinction becomes important when designing a cellular coverage system.



Your Phone Saying “5G” Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Cellular networks are constantly evolving.

One common network architecture is known as 5G Non-Standalone, or 5G NSA. In this type of network, 5G NR operates alongside existing 4G LTE infrastructure.

Your phone automatically manages these connections in the background and may utilize different cellular bands depending on signal strength, network conditions, location, and your carrier.


For the average user, the important question usually isn't whether the phone displays 4G LTE or 5G.


The important questions are:

Can you make and receive calls reliably?

Can you send text messages?

Can you use mobile data?


Does your phone work throughout the building?

For many homes and businesses experiencing weak indoor cellular coverage, improving the existing LTE and compatible cellular bands can make an enormous difference without necessarily requiring every available 5G NR frequency to be amplified.



True 5G NR Booster Solutions Do Exist

There are now cellular coverage systems designed to directly amplify newer 5G NR frequencies.


For example, the Nextivity CEL-FI GO G51 can provide direct 5G NR coverage, including support for mid-band n77 in the Americas, while also supporting compatible LTE frequencies.


Unlike a traditional multi-carrier wideband booster, however, the GO G51 operates as a single-carrier cellular coverage solution. The system is configured around the mobile network operator that needs improved coverage.


This illustrates an important part of designing modern cellular coverage systems:

The best solution depends on the carriers, frequencies, outside signal conditions, building construction, coverage area, and actual needs of the customer.



What If a Business Needs Multiple Carriers?

Commercial cellular coverage becomes more complex when employees and customers use AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, FirstNet, and other networks inside the same facility.

Depending on the project, the solution could involve a traditional multi-carrier Commercial cellular signal booster, a passive DAS design, carrier-specific equipment, an active DAS solution, or multiple cellular coverage systems working together.


Larger commercial and enterprise projects may require dedicated equipment for different carriers or frequency ranges in order to deliver the desired combination of 4G LTE and 5G NR coverage.


That's why a proper cellular site survey and system design are important.



Don't Buy a Booster Based on the “5G” Label Alone

One of the biggest mistakes when choosing a cellular signal booster is focusing only on whether the equipment says “5G.”


Your phone doesn't necessarily stay connected to one frequency or even one type of cellular signal all day. Depending on your carrier, location, signal strength, network traffic, and available towers, your phone may utilize different LTE and 5G bands as conditions change.


That's why simply targeting one 5G frequency may not solve the actual coverage problem.

A system designed around a particular 5G band may provide excellent amplification for that frequency while not supporting some of the other 4G LTE or 5G frequencies your phone regularly uses. If the outside 5G signal is already weak or inconsistent, concentrating only on that signal may not provide the reliable indoor coverage you were expecting.


In many situations, the better approach is to first determine which cellular bands are actually available and usable at the property.


A properly designed system may focus on strengthening the LTE and compatible cellular frequencies that provide reliable talk, text, and everyday mobile data, and then incorporate additional 5G NR coverage when the available signal and customer's needs justify it.



This Is Why a Cellular Site Survey Matters

Before recommending equipment, a professional cellular site survey can identify:

  • Which carriers have usable signal at the property

  • Which 4G LTE and 5G bands are actually reaching the building

  • Signal strength and signal quality for those bands

  • Which frequencies are providing the most reliable service

  • Whether true 5G NR coverage is available and worth amplifying

  • Which outside antenna locations provide the best donor signal

  • What equipment and DAS design best match the building



Instead of buying a booster because the box says “5G,” the system should be designed around what the cellular network is actually providing at your location.

A properly designed cellular signal booster or passive DAS system that improves the available LTE and compatible cellular frequencies can still provide a significant improvement in everyday cellular service.


If the site survey shows that strong, usable 5G NR frequencies are available and the customer needs that additional coverage or capacity, then a 5G NR solution can be incorporated into the system design.


It's about choosing the right technology for the property rather than simply choosing the newest technology.
